Civic Movement WAKE UP! Skopje
expresses its deep concern with the recent acts of the Macedonian police and
the raids against houses of Albanians, which are turning into daily routine.
We are particularly concerned with
the “mistaken” raids without official justification, including the
“coincidental” raid against the house of a journalist. We hope that this
interference does not represent a challenge against the freedom of speech by
the state authorities. We remind you that the attacks against journalists in
September 2006 were strongly condemned by the democratic world and the deep
concerns about these developments were expressed in all the reports about Macedonia.
We invite the Ministry of Interior of
the Republic of Macedonia to overcome its presumptions
of guilt and to undertake penalizing measures against its staff for the
arbitrary acts and prejudiced and failed arrests several weeks ago.
This “disciplinary” campaign is perceived as
extraordinarily worrying by the Albanian community and WAKE UP! calls for an
immediate intervention of our friends from the international community to
prevent further escalation of the situation.
